Porto-Vecchio or Bonifacio: where to stay for your holiday?
It is probably one of the first questions that comes up when planning a holiday in Southern Corsica: should you stay in Porto-Vecchio or Bonifacio?
Porto-Vecchio appeals for its lively atmosphere, shops and proximity to Palombaggia and Santa Giulia. Bonifacio offers spectacular scenery, its cliffs, harbour and a completely different atmosphere.
So which should you choose?
After years of exploring this part of Corsica, we would happily suggest a third answer: why choose between them at all?
This is precisely one of the reasons why we love Sotta. Located between Porto-Vecchio, Figari and Bonifacio, the village allows you to enjoy both towns while also exploring a much wider part of Southern Corsica.
And in the evening, rather than staying in the middle of the tourist bustle, you can return to Bella Sotta and rediscover the silence, the swimming pool and the hills covered in Corsican maquis.
Porto-Vecchio or Bonifacio: two very different ways to experience Southern Corsica
Choosing Porto-Vecchio for your holiday is an obvious option. The town brings together shops, restaurants, a marina and much of the summer activity of southeastern Corsica.
Above all, it provides access to the beaches that have made the region famous: Palombaggia, Santa Giulia, Tamaricciu and numerous smaller coves.
For a family planning to spend most of its holiday along this coastline, Porto-Vecchio is therefore a logical choice.
Bonifacio offers a completely different experience. Its citadel perched above the limestone cliffs, its harbour, narrow streets and the landscapes of the Bouches de Bonifacio make it unlike almost anywhere else in Corsica. Staying in Bonifacio also allows you to experience the town early in the morning and in the evening, when the atmosphere changes.
However, in both cases, choosing one of these towns as your main base naturally focuses much of your holiday on that particular geographical area.
This is where Sotta becomes interesting: instead of deciding whether you prefer Porto-Vecchio or Bonifacio before you even arrive, you can simply decide each morning.
Sotta: why stay between Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio?
On a map, the location of Sotta in Southern Corsica almost explains its appeal by itself.
The village lies inland from Porto-Vecchio, on the route towards Figari, while Bonifacio can easily be reached by continuing south.
From Bella Sotta, Porto-Vecchio harbour is approximately 14 minutes away, Figari Airport around 11 minutes and Bonifacio approximately 25 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
This location changes the way you organise your holiday.
One morning, we can leave early for Santa Giulia or Palombaggia. The following day, we head towards Bonifacio to walk along the cliffs, have lunch by the harbour or continue towards Balistra, Sant'Amanza or Cala Longa.
On another day, we can head in a completely different direction towards Figari, Pianottoli-Caldarello, Sartène or the Alta Rocca.
That is ultimately Sotta's main advantage: your holiday is not confined to one particular part of Southern Corsica.
In July and August, location becomes even more important
Outside the peak season, travelling around Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio is generally much easier. In July and August, things naturally change as visitor numbers increase.
Roads leading towards the beaches and some routes around Porto-Vecchio can become busy at certain times of day.
This is one of the reasons why we particularly appreciate being based in Sotta.
To travel towards Bonifacio, Figari, Pianottoli or Sartène, there is no need to cross central Porto-Vecchio. When we want to head towards Palombaggia, Lecci or further north, we simply adjust our schedule.
We like leaving early, sometimes very early when we are going diving or walking along the beach, enjoying the calm of the morning and then returning before or after the busiest traffic periods.
It sometimes means slightly changing the rhythm of the holiday, but the result is worthwhile: less time in the car and more time where you actually wanted to be.
Staying in the maquis rather than directly by the sea
There is also a difference that maps and driving times cannot explain.
Staying in Sotta means accepting that the sea is not directly outside your front door in exchange for something else: space, silence and the Corsican maquis.
At Bella Sotta, this was a deliberate choice.
After a day at Santa Giulia, Palombaggia or Bonifacio, we love returning to the house, opening the large sliding glass doors and simply looking out over the hills.
Air regularly moves across the property and this feeling of openness becomes particularly pleasant during the hot days of July and August.
You can swim in the heated pool, have a drink beneath the pergola and watch the evening light slowly move across the olive trees.
Sometimes, once we have returned home, we simply do not feel like going out again.
That is another important consideration when choosing a holiday rental between Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio: the house is not simply somewhere to sleep between two days at the beach.
It becomes part of the holiday itself.
Porto-Vecchio, Bonifacio or Sotta: which one suits your holiday?
The answer ultimately depends much more on the way you want to spend your holiday than on which of these places is the most beautiful.
If your absolute priority is being able to go out on foot in the evening, enjoy plenty of restaurants and spend most of your time around Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, staying in Porto-Vecchio or its immediate surroundings may be the most convenient option.
If you want to spend most of your holiday around the citadel, harbour, cliffs and beaches of the far south, Bonifacio is naturally very appealing.
But if you are staying for one or two weeks and your aim is to really explore Southern Corsica, we think the question should be approached differently.
Why choose one end of the region when you can stay between the two?
From Sotta, Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio become two destinations among many others. You can add Figari, Pianottoli, the Alta Rocca, Zonza, Sartène and even Propriano for a longer day trip.
That is exactly how we like to experience the region.
Bella Sotta: a holiday home between Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio
This also explains the location of Bella Sotta.
We did not choose the bergerie because it was as close as possible to one particular beach. On the contrary, we wanted somewhere that would allow us to experience Southern Corsica as a whole.
The house accommodates up to six guests in three bedrooms, with two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, air conditioning and a heated saltwater swimming pool.
It is set in peaceful surroundings, with wide-open views across the maquis and surrounding hills.
The village of Sotta also provides the shops and everyday services you need without having to return to Porto-Vecchio every time.
We find this combination particularly appealing for a two-week holiday. You can spend several days exploring and then suddenly decide to do absolutely nothing.
Stay beside the pool, read beneath the pergola and look out towards the horizon.
Those moments become just as much a part of the holiday as Bonifacio or Palombaggia.
So, is it better to stay in Porto-Vecchio or Bonifacio?
If you want to explore both towns and the whole of the far south, our answer is therefore: not necessarily either one.
Choosing Sotta means staying close enough to Porto-Vecchio to enjoy its beaches, restaurants and shops while also being close enough to Bonifacio for a visit to feel effortless.
More importantly, this location also opens the roads towards Figari, western Southern Corsica and the mountains.
It is a different way of thinking about your holiday.
Instead of choosing a house because it belongs to one particular beach area, you choose a central base for exploring Southern Corsica, then adapt each day according to the weather, wind, visitor numbers and what you feel like doing.
And when we return to Bella Sotta in the evening, there is one contrast we probably appreciate more than anything else.
A few hours earlier, we may have been walking through the busy streets of Bonifacio or lying on the sand at Palombaggia. Then suddenly there is nothing but the maquis, the breeze through the olive trees and the evening light disappearing behind the hills.
For us, that is also what a holiday in Southern Corsica is about.
Getting there from Bella Sotta
Bella Sotta is located in Sotta, Southern Corsica, between Porto-Vecchio, Figari and Bonifacio. Porto-Vecchio harbour is approximately 14 minutes away, Figari Airport around 11 minutes and Bonifacio approximately 25 minutes, depending on traffic. Santa Giulia can be reached in around fifteen minutes in good conditions, while the other beaches in the area are also within easy driving distance.
During peak season, we simply recommend adjusting your schedule on days when you need to travel through Porto-Vecchio. Leaving early often means enjoying lighter traffic, cooler temperatures and quieter beaches at the same time.
When you return, Sotta provides exactly the contrast we look for after a day on the coast: a peaceful house, a swimming pool and the fresh air of an open landscape surrounded by Corsican maquis.
